Lunch breaks typically involve balancing your checkbook, paying bills, picking up your dry cleaning . . . oh, and eating. So, trying to fit in a date can be quite complicated to say the least. Timing is everything! Plan ahead. Try to bribe your boss several days in advance for a longer lunch break so you can enjoy your date and not feel rushed or stressed out. You want to put your best foot forward, relax, and make a nice impression on your date.

If the weather is warm, offer to pack a picnic lunch and bring along a comfortable blanket. It is easy to create a romantic scene near a water fountain or under a tree. In the winter months, book a reservation at a cozy restaurant ahead of the lunch hour, or after to avoid the rush. Pre-order if you can so your lunch will be ready on your arrival. Choose a place that has a comfortable and quiet atmosphere so the two of you can talk. Good communications is a key component of a successful relationship.

Some singles intentionally use lunch breaks to meet people . . . choose wisely and plan your strategy ahead of time. Food courts can be ideal, but watch out for those getting a quick bite to eat and are rushing to get back to the office. Use the captivity of a waiting line to strike up a conversation. For instance, you can always ask what the best thing to order would be. Don’t wait until you see the person again later in the week—that may never happen . . . strike while the iron is hot and ask to sit down and eat lunch with that person.

Multitasking during your lunch break can often times pay off. Go and get that book you want! Browse through the CDs, take a gander at the flowers. Who knows, your perfect match may be doing the same thing!

I know, you feel like an outcast going out alone on New Year’s Eve, but actually, this is a great night to do it! Put on your push up bra, de-lint your corduroy jacket, and shake the cobwebs out of your little black dress. Have a positive attitude and stop feeling sorry for yourself. Swipe on some cologne or lipstick, and have a great time with friends and family.

Use social networking to find out where the action is! Sign up for the party, and share with your single friends! If none excite you, host one at your home or apartment, even if it is the last minute! The prompts make it easy to post one on Facebook; or create an invitation on E-vites and send them electronically. Have guests bring a dessert, CD, or favorite drink to share, and watch the ball drop with them! Also, it never hurts to have several dozen mistletoe hanging around . . .

Or designate a place for everyone to meet. Make reservations now to your favorite restaurant; or just meet at the bar of a convenient tavern and go from there!

View the evening as an adventure. Don’t waste unattainable expectations on the night. Instead, think of it as a special night to truly be yourself. Remember…today is the first day of the rest of your life. Let your new positive attitude be your NewYear’s resolution. As my mother always said, Love has a way of finding you when you least expect it!

Holiday Etiquette For Dating--Where To Spend The Holidays

You need to consider how long your relationship has been and if there are children involved. If you have been dating for under six months it is recommended that you are with your respective families on Christmas Day or Chanukah and do your normal traditions, but make plans to see each other proceeding or following the big day. If you have already met each other’s immediate family and the tone is comfortable, then consider splitting your time between the two families. For instance, you could visit your respective other’s family at lunchtime and spend the evening with your family.

If you have been dating your significant other for under a year, you need to weigh some factors.

Do you actually want to introduce this person to your family?

Are there any complications, like controlling parents or a jealous ex-spouse?

Are your children ready to have your new partner join in on family traditions?

New introductions at the holidays can be awkward, as this is a time especially for family and friends. Can it be done? Sure, but it can be overwhelming for the significant other if the gathering is large.

If you have been dating for over a year, it is time to break out an extra seat around the table and make introductions. Hopefully by this point, most of your immediate family has already been introduced. If you haven’t made introductions yet, then you are either embarrassed by your date, or your family.

First off, everyone’s family is embarrassing, and their faults are especially magnified over the holidays. So, don’t sweat it. Let your date know a head of time, what to expect: Grandma has dementia, Uncle Tom drinks a little too much egg nog, Dad falls asleep on the couch and snores, the family likes to play tag-football after dinner in their underwear, etc.

It is expected to bring something to the family you are meeting. Since it is the holidays, a poinsettia plant, a bottle of wine, or a tin of homemade cookies are all thoughtful ideas. And…we all know how much children love cookies!

Awkward questions? They always come . . . when are you getting engaged/married; are you two living together. . . Just grin and bear it. No need to go into lengthy detail on your future plans. Keep it simple and brief and be polite about it.

The holidays seem to be brighter when you have someone to share in them with. But how do you do it tastefully?

Regardless of how much time you both have spent together, or if parents have been met, it is wise to stick to a small gesture. I’m not talking about coffee mugs and poinsettias . . . those do not evoke images of thoughtfulness to me, but ones of last-minute shopping at the grocery store.

Be thoughtful about your gift when shopping. Think about what you know of them already—maybe they are into documentaries or Jazz music. A nice CD or e-book download are thoughtful. Stay away from hobbies . . . most likely, they already have everything they need. It is too premature to buy an expensive gift . . . this can put undue pressure on a new relationship. And don’t fall for the “let’s not exchange gifts” or “You don’t have to get me anything “lines. It’s a trap.
